After several months of preparation and virtual communication over the internet, a minor miracle happened today. A dozen ladies converged on a tiny island in the Atlantic from all corners of the world. Mariam from Saudi Arabia arrived in Reykjavik from the US, Asma arrived from Doha, Natasa came from Slovenia via Paris, Ida our Swedish team member arrived on a ship from Greenland, Lara flew overnight from Jordan - and everyone convened in a coffee shop in Iceland's International airport.
Our first challenge was to get the team, their luggage and all the equipment we need for the expedition from the airport to a quiet corner of Iceland where the team can begin learning all the skills they will need for the journey to the North Pole. Luckily, expedition leader Felicity had just the truck for the job - but even this monster vehicle looked a little overwhelmed with all the boxes and bags!
The team are now settled into the remote huts that will be home for the next few days. We have a lot of work to do but it will be fun. This may be the first time the team have met each other but already there is a great buzz within the group and the signs are good that this is going to be an awesome polar team!
