Waking to a white dawn...

While most people were waking up to start their Monday morning, the team woke after their first night in the tents on the glacier to find a world of white outside. Most of the team had had a cold and uncomfortable night in the tent and learned first-hand some important lessons for keeping warm on the ice. Breakfast re-warmed cold bodies and soon everyone was eager to explore the white outside the tent. Wrapping up in lots of layers, plus mittens and goggles, the team went for a long ski around the base camp. They returned to attach sledges to harnesses around their hips and set off again on another ski tour to practise dragging a sledge. Some of the bravest loaded their sledges with snow to give it some extra weight.

After lunch in the tents the team set off again with sledges, this time using the GPS to navigate themselves back to camp in the windy and hazy conditions. For the first time, many of the team are beginning to feel like proper polar explorers....
